102: Racking Safety Management

For the people responsible for keeping a racking system safe

Managing a racking system is more than making sure the shelves are full. It means understanding load limits, recognising damage, knowing when to act and making sure repairs get done the right way. When something goes wrong with racking, it’s usually the manager or supervisor who has to answer for it.

This course gives you the knowledge to stay ahead of that — not just react to it. It is the second course in IRIA’s racking safety series.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for managers and supervisors who oversee racking systems as part of their daily work. If you’re responsible for the safe use, maintenance, or compliance of a racking system – this course is for you.

Prerequisite: 101 Introduction to Racking Safety must be successfully completed before starting this course.

What the course covers

  • Global and Australian racking standards, including AS4084
  • How to carry out safety checks and read IRIA inspection reports
  • Risk and repair allocation – what gets fixed, when, and by whom
  • Racking types, configurations and general structural principles
  • How to identify and assess damage to uprights, beams, baseplates, bracing and other components
  • Operational requirements and the golden rules for safe racking use
  • Repair types, authorised repairers and the racking repair cycle
  • Safety documentation and record keeping

What you’ll be able to do after this course

On completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Understand the technical aspects and components of a racking system
  • Identify, assess and record damage to a racking system
  • Understand the types of repair that will return a system to safe operation
  • Manage the full racking repair cycle with confidence
  • Apply the relevant standards

Get the understanding you need to manage your obligations around racking safely and with confidence.

How the Racking Safety Management course works

This course follows IRIA’s learn, confirm and test approach. Each section is followed by a short quiz that must be passed before moving on, with a final assessment at the end.

The course is completed entirely online at your own pace. Managers can track completion across their team through the IRIA training portal. On passing, staff receive a certificate as evidence of training for work health and safety compliance purposes.

  • Ultimately your employer, but in practice it sits with whoever manages the racking day to day. That’s usually a supervisor or facilities manager. 102 Racking Safety Management provides the knowledge to meet those obligations with confidence rather than guesswork.

  • Never exceed the rated loads shown on the load signs and always place pallets squarely on the beams. Don’t climb the racking or alter its configuration without approval. Report any damage or impact immediately, no matter how minor, so it can be assessed and recorded.

  • Some minor repairs can be done in-house, but only by trained staff using components that meet the original specification. Incorrect repairs can compromise the whole system. 102 Racking Safety Management covers what can be fixed in-house and what needs a qualified repairer.
