Shelving systems might look straightforward, but installing or repairing them incorrectly creates real safety risks. This course gives anyone involved in shelving installation and repair the knowledge to do the job correctly, safely, and in line with the required standard.
This is the fourth course in IRIA’s racking safety series. Completing it in alongside 103: Installing and Repairing Racking Systems, provides the most value, as most people in relevant roles work with both racking and shelving.
This course is for anyone who installs, maintains, or repairs shelving systems. If you’re responsible for fitting out, reconfiguring, or repairing shelving – this course is for you.
Prerequisite: 101: Introduction to Racking Safety
Recommend completing the following course first:
102: Racking Safety Management
On completion of this course you’ll be able to:
Get a clear understanding of what correct installation looks like and how to bring a damaged system back into safe operation.
This course follows IRIA’s learn, confirm and test approach. Each section is followed by a short quiz that must be passed before moving on. At the end of the course, a final assessment tests your overall understanding.
The course is completed entirely online, at your own pace. Managers can track completion across their team through the IRIA training portal. On passing, staff receive a certificate as evidence of training for Work, Health and Safety compliance purposes.
Please note: this course includes audio. You will need headphones or sound enabled on your device.

A tradesman was crushed by a falling stack of pallets weighing an estimated one tonne in a horror workplace accident this morning. Several ambulance and police crews rushed to the Bond Crescent building site in Wetherill Park, west of Sydney, just after 10.30am.
Shelving has its own requirements, but the underlying principle is the same. It needs to be installed correctly, maintained regularly and inspected for damage. Stability is a particular concern with shelving. Get the installation or loading wrong and the safety risks are just as real as they are with pallet racking.
Fixing requirements depend on the height, configuration and load of the system. As a general rule, any shelving that could become unstable under load or in the event of an impact needs to be fixed. 104 Installing and Repairing Shelving Systems covers the correct installation requirements including when and how fixing is required to meet the standard.
104 Installing and Repairing Shelving Systems covers the most common repair scenarios – unstable shelving, deflected shelves, out-of-level components – and the correct way to approach each one.
