103: Installing and Repairing Racking Systems

For the people who install, maintain and repair racking

Installing or repairing racking isn’t just a physical task – it’s a technical one. This course gives anyone involved in racking installation and repair the knowledge and practical understanding to do the job safely, correctly and in line with Australian standards.

This is the third course in IRIA’s racking safety series. Completing it in alongside 104 Installing and Repairing Shelving Systems, provides the most value, as most people in relevant roles work with both racking and shelving.

Who this course is for

This course is designed for anyone who installs, maintains, or repairs racking systems, including:

  • Racking installers and maintenance staff
  • Warehouse fit-out and reconfiguration teams
  • Facilities and maintenance managers responsible for racking repairs
  • Anyone working toward certification in racking installation and repair

Prerequisite: 101 Introduction to racking safety
Recommended: a basic understanding of racking and confidence using tools is helpful, along with completing the following before starting this course.
102 Racking safety management

What the course covers

  • Work health and safety legislation and the standards that govern racking in Australia and internationally
  • Racking terminology, key elements, accessories and basic structures including pallet racking
  • Cold formed steel structures, design principles and racking types
  • External forces including wind loading and seismic requirements
  • How to read an inspection report, the traffic light damage classification system, and returning racking to service
  • Common damage types and the golden rules for safe racking operation
  • Step-by-step installation of frames, beams, row spacers, safety clips, fixings and levelling
  • Repairs to uprights, beams, baseplates, safety clips and upright splices

What you’ll be able to do after this course

On completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Read and understand a racking inspection report
  • Install new racking and repair existing racking to the required Australian standard
  • Carry out installation and repair work safely and efficiently.

Get the technical and design understanding you need to bring a damaged system back into safe operation with confidence.

How the Installing and Repairing Racking Systems course works

This course follows IRIA’s learn, confirm and test approach. Each learning section is followed by a short quiz that must be passed before moving on. At the end of the course, a final assessment tests your overall understanding.

The course is completed entirely online, at your own pace. Managers can track completion across their team through the IRIA training portal. On passing, staff receive a certificate as evidence of training for Work, Health and Safety compliance purposes.

Please note: this course includes audio. You will need headphones or sound enabled on your device.

  • Experience doesn’t equal compliance. Racking standards have been updated and what was common practice on older installations isn’t always acceptable under AS4084:2023. 103 Installing and Repairing Racking Systems makes sure your work meets the current standard.

  • It follows the original design specification, uses the correct components, is properly levelled and fixed to the floor, and has a verified SWL chart displayed on site. Change any one of those without proper assessment and the system may no longer meet the standard. 103 Installing and Repairing Racking Systems covers each step in detail.

  • Definitely not. Once a beam or upright has been damaged past tolerance, its load-bearing capacity is compromised even if it looks straight again. Damaged components should be replaced, not reworked and refitted. 103 Installing and Repairing Racking Systems covers which repairs are acceptable and how to return a damaged system to safe operation correctly.
