105: Completing Weekly Racking Inspections

For the people who carry out day-to-day racking checks

Racking is accessed by forklifts and other equipment every day. That creates a real risk of damage – and damage that goes unnoticed can lead to component failure or, in serious cases, a collapse. Weekly racking checks are one of the most important safety habits in any warehouse. This course gives staff the knowledge to carry them out properly – not just tick a box.

This is the fifth course in IRIA’s racking safety series. Please note: this course does not replace the need for an annual inspection to be carried out by an independent racking inspection company.

Who this course is for

This course is for safety representatives and operational staff who work with steel storage racking and are responsible for carrying out daily or weekly safety checks. It’s also useful for businesses looking to build regular racking checks into their safety culture.

Prerequisite: 101: Introduction to Racking Safety

What the course covers

  • The difference between daily, weekly and annual racking inspections
  • What to check before you start an inspection
  • Racking parts and terminology
  • The traffic light damage classification system
  • What to look for – common damage types and how to assess them
  • How to identify and record reportable damage
  • How to report damage and what happens next
  • The repair cycle from damage identification to sign-off

What you’ll be able to do after this course

On completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Use the correct racking terminology
  • Identify, assess and record damage to a racking system
  • Read and understand an inspection report

Get a clear understanding of the repair cycle and apply the traffic light system successfully.

How the Completing weekly racking inspections course works

This course follows IRIA’s learn, confirm and test approach. Each section is followed by a short quiz that must be passed before moving on, with a final assessment at the end.

The course is completed entirely online, at your own pace. Managers can track completion across their team through the IRIA training portal. On passing, staff receive a certificate as evidence of training for Work, Health and Safety compliance purposes.

  • Daily and weekly checks are carried out by your own staff to spot obvious damage or changes between annual inspections. The annual formal inspection is a thorough, independent assessment against the Australian standard. One doesn’t replace the other – they serve different purposes and work in concert to keep you safe.

  • Yes. 105: Completing Weekly Racking Inspections gives your staff the knowledge to carry out regular checks – what to look for, how to record it and how to report it. That’s everything you need to build a regular check program into your site’s safety routine.

  • Record it, photograph it and report it straight away. If the damage looks serious, take the location out of service immediately and keep it clear until it has been assessed.
